AREAS AFFECTED: Emmet; Cheboygan; Presque Isle; Montmorency; Alpena
DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...Heavy mixed precipitation. Additional snow accumulations between 2 and 5 inches and ice accumulations ranging from a light glaze to one tenth of an inch. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph. * WHERE...Alpena, Cheboygan, Emmet, Montmorency, and Presque Isle Counties. * WHEN...Until 10 PM EST this evening. * IMPACTS...Roads will become slick and hazardous due to the wet snow. Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions will impact commutes through this evening.
INSTRUCTION: If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. Persons should delay all travel if possible. If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility. Leave plenty of room between you and the motorist ahead of you, and allow extra time to reach your destination. Avoid sudden braking or acceleration, and be especially cautious on hills or when making turns. Make sure your car is winterized and in good working order.

A contrail is an artificial cloud, created by the passing of an
aircraft.
Contrails form because water vapor in the exhaust of aircraft engines is suspended
in the air under certain temperatures and humidity conditions. These contrails
are called exhaust contrails.
Another type of contrail can form due to a temporary reduction in air pressure
moving over the plane's surface, causing condensation.
These are called aerodynamic contrails.
When you can see your breath on a cold day, it is also because of condensation.
The reason contrails last longer than the condensation from your breath is
because the water in contrails freezes into ice particles.
