AREAS AFFECTED: Little Belt and Highwood Mountains; Gallatin and Madison County Mountains and Centennial Mountains
DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 6 and 12 inches with locally higher amounts above 7000 ft. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph will create areas of blowing and drifting snow Thursday night. * WHERE...Little Belt and Highwood Mountains and Gallatin and Madison County Mountains and Centennial Mountains. * WHEN...From 9 AM Thursday to noon MDT Friday. * IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult and tire chains may be required for some vehicles. Those in the backcountry should ensure they are prepared for dangerous conditions. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Snow accumulation on road surfaces may be limited through Thursday afternoon with increasing chances for travel impacts from snow accumulation and wind Thursday evening.
INSTRUCTION: If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. Fog is technically a type of stratus cloud, which lies along the
ground and obscures visibility.
It is usually created when humidity in the air condenses into tiny water droplets.
Because of this, some places are more prone to foggy weather, such as regions
close to a body of water.
Fog is similar to mist; both are the appearance of water droplets suspended in
the air, but fog is the term applied to the condition when visibility is less than 1 km.
